By 2021, AML had ambitious goals to grow turnover, expand its workforce, diversify its customer base, and build long-term competitiveness.

However, achieving these goals required more than ambition. The business needed to strengthen its leadership, commercial capability and operational processes to sustain and scale growth in a challenging market.

“We are incredibly proud of what AML has achieved through the Sharing in Growth programme. The growth they have delivered is testament to their vision, resilience, and commitment to excellence. It is fantastic to see how a government-backed initiative can make such a tangible difference – not only in doubling turnover, but also in retaining jobs, creating new employment, and building world-class technical capabilities. AML’s journey shows what can be accomplished when ambitious companies partner with the right support, and it is hugely rewarding to see them now thrive as part of a global group.”

AML joined the government-funded Sharing in Growth (SiG) programme to accelerate its transformation. Through a tailored combination of coaching, diagnostics and ongoing mentoring, SiG worked closely with AML to enhance business capability, embed stronger processes and develop leadership resilience. The programme supported AML in refining its growth strategy, strengthening operations and preparing for investment.

This four-year collaboration delivered practical improvements across commercial planning, customer development and operational efficiency. It also created the confidence and structure AML needed to pursue new market opportunities and secure long-term customer contracts.

The impact of the SiG partnership has been exceptional. AML has more than doubled turnover, growing from £4.5 million to £10.7 million, with a 94% increase in PBIT. The company expanded its factory footprint from 23,000 to 35,000 square feet, scaling CNC capacity from 11 to 24 machines and increasing headcount from 56 to 88 employees.

Market diversification has been another major success, with the energy sector now accounting for 41% of sales, up from just 5% at the start of the programme. AML has also secured its first long-term contract and established relationships with four major OEMs.

Perhaps most significantly, AML’s transformation positioned the company for acquisition by the global Walsin Group in 2024, with investment secured to support a £40 million growth target by 2029.

Beyond the numbers, AML’s journey with SiG has safeguarded and created jobs, strengthened leadership, and reinforced South Yorkshire’s position as a centre for advanced manufacturing excellence.

“Through our engagement with Sharing in Growth, AML has undergone a genuine transformation. We have restructured how we operate, embedded stronger processes, scaled our customer development capabilities, and positioned ourselves for sustainable growth. The programme’s bespoke coaching, rigorous diagnostics, and continuous support have helped turn ambition into action, enabling us to elevate capability across leadership, operations and sales. Today, AML is more resilient, competitive, and ready to seize new contracts with confidence.”

Mark Hands – Managing Director, AML

“AML’s success has come down to more than just tools and frameworks – it’s been about their willingness to learn, adapt, and make the most of every idea shared through the Sharing in Growth programme. The team didn’t just take advice; they ran with it, shaped it to their business, and turned it into real results. That mindset and energy have been the driving force behind their transformation.”
